چکیده

Purpose – Peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming quickly emerges as an important application over the internet. A lot of systems have been implemented to support peer-to-peer media streaming. However, some problems still exist. These problems include non-guaranteed communication efficiency, limited upload capacity and dynamics of suppliers which are all related to the overlay topology design. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel overlay construction framework for peer-to-peer streaming. Design/methodology/approach – To exploit the bandwidth resource of neighboring peers with low communication delay, application of the grouping method was proposed to construct a flexible two-layered locality-aware overlay network. In the proposed overlay, peers are clustered into locality groups according to the communication delays of peers. These locality groups are interconnected with each other to form the top layer of the overlay. In each locality group, peers form an overlay mesh for transmitting stream to other peers of the same group. These overlay meshes form the bottom layer of the overlay. Findings – Through simulations, the performance was compared in terms of communication efficiency, source-to-end delivery efficiency and reliability of the delivery paths of the proposed solution currently. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve the construction of a scalable, efficient and stable peer-to-peer streaming environment. Originality/value – The new contributions in this paper are a novel framework which includes the adaptability, maintenance and optimization schemes to adjust the size of overlay dynamically according to the dynamics of peers; and considering the importance of locality of peers in the system.

DagStream: Locality Aware and Failure Resilient Peer-to-Peer Streaming

Live peer to peer (P2P) media streaming faces many challenges such as peer unreliability and bandwidth heterogeneity. To effectively address these challenges, general “mesh” based P2P streaming architectures have recently been adopted. Mesh-based systems allow peers to aggregate bandwidth from multiple neighbors, and dynamically adapt to changing network conditions and neighbor failures. Howeve...

Characterizing Locality-aware P2P Streaming

Peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming systems have been increasingly popular and successful in today’s Internet, which provide large collections of video channels to millions of users at low server costs. The large volumes of P2P streaming traffic are exceeding those incurred by BitTorrent-like file sharing applications, threatening huge traffic relay cost to the Internet service providers (ISPs). ...

The performance of locality-aware topologies for peer-to-peer live streaming

This paper is concerned with the effect of overlay network topology on the performance of live streaming peer-to-peer systems. The paper focuses on the evaluation of topologies which are aware of the delays experienced between different peers on the network. Metrics are defined which assess the topologies in terms of delay, bandwidth usage and resilience to peer drop-out. Several topology creat...

Locality-aware streaming in hybrid P2P-cloud CDN systems

the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract The cloud CDN has been exploited as a cost-effective and elastic way for video streaming, where the content providers only pay for resources (e.g., bandwidth, storage, Web service) that they use. As a server-client solution, the cost on the content providers, especially the bandwidth cost for delivering videos from the cloud t...

An Enhanced Approach to Adaptive Video Streaming over P2P Networks

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks became the new paradigm in video streaming. P2P are more scalable in many scenarios where peers can easily share resources and feed each other. However, churn of peers can depict the nature of P2P and lead to packet loss, end-to-end delay as well as continuity indexing in terms of streaming. However, due to the nature of multimedia (Live or video on demand) quality i...
